Despite the benign and (http://maplered.com) jolly appearance of this half-elephant, half-human
figure, he is characterized by a complex iconography. There are several
version of his birth. In the Shivapurana, one of the best-known, Sivas
consort, Parvati distressed at Shivas intrusion during her bathing ritual,
created a glorious being by parthenogenesis to serve as guardian, naming him
her son. When that son tried to prevent the entrance of Shiva, the enraged
god decapitated him. In attempting to console Parvati, Shiva promised to
attach to the body of the young man the head of the first living creature he
met; it happened to be an elephant.
